Today, San Francisco marked the opening of a new affordable housing development at 180 Jones Street in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Mayor London N. Breed joined representatives from the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), housing advocates, and development partners to celebrate the completion of this project. The nine-story building, constructed on a previously vacant lot, provides 70 new homes for low-income residents, including 35 units for individuals who were previously unhoused.

Mayor Breed emphasized the importance of such projects in making neighborhoods more livable and providing opportunities for residents. “Over the last several years we have taken decisive steps to make the Tenderloin a safer, cleaner, and more inviting neighborhood but we are also creating opportunities for residents to thrive, including by building more affordable housing,” she stated.

The building at 180 Jones Street is part of Mayor Breed's broader strategy to increase affordable housing across San Francisco. This approach aims to meet state-mandated housing goals by allowing for the construction of 82,000 new homes. The city recently received recognition from California with a Prohousing Designation due to its efforts in accelerating housing developments.

Amenities provided to residents include a community room on the ground floor, property management with round-the-clock desk service, social workers on-site, bike parking facilities, free internet access through the City's Fiber to Housing program, and an open landscaped courtyard. Additionally, 180 Jones Street achieved LEED Gold Certification for sustainable construction practices and is powered entirely by renewable energy sources via CleanPowerSF.

The development forms part of San Francisco’s largest expansion of permanent supportive housing in two decades. HSH Executive Director Shireen McSpadden noted that providing stable homes empowers vulnerable community members: “By providing safe and stable homes, we empower our most vulnerable community members to reclaim their lives."

Funding for 180 Jones Street was secured through partnerships involving MOHCD and HCD. The project benefited from both Multifamily Housing Program awards and funds from California's Housing Accelerator Tier 1 program under ARPA's Coronavirus State Fiscal Recovery Fund.

Gustavo Velasquez from HCD praised these funding mechanisms: “We are proud that HCD’s Housing Accelerator and Multifamily Housing Programs have paired to bring critical housing online faster for city residents most in need.”

This project resulted from community negotiations aimed at securing benefits like "step-up housing" alongside market-rate developments nearby. TNDC was chosen in June 2019 as developers tasked with managing services at this location.
