San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed has announced the return of Winter Wander-land to Union Square for the holiday season. This event, which last year attracted over 1.6 million visitors, is part of a series of activities aimed at boosting downtown's economy.

Mayor Breed expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Earlier this week we came together for the annual lighting of the Macy’s Great Tree in Union Square, one of San Francisco’s favorite holiday traditions and I am so excited to again welcome back Winter Wander-land.” She highlighted various attractions such as ice skating and shopping opportunities in Union Square.

Union Square is a major draw with nearly 10 million visitors annually and offers over 4.8 million square feet of retail space. The district will feature special promotions and exclusive events throughout November and December.

The Winter Wander-land is part of broader efforts including Let’s Glow SF light show to revitalize downtown as outlined in Mayor Breed's Roadmap to San Francisco’s Future. Since 2022, $15 million has been invested in supporting these initiatives.

Marisa Rodriguez, CEO of Union Square Alliance, emphasized the importance of the holidays in Union Square: “In Union Square, the holidays are more than just a season—they’re an experience filled with joy, tradition, and cherished memories that last a lifetime.”

The HEART Action Plan introduced by Mayor Breed aims to address post-COVID challenges like storefront vacancies and declining foot traffic. With over $13 million allocated from the Mayor’s budget, it focuses on creating vibrant public spaces through events and activations.

Powell Street will become an Ornament Trail starting mid-November as part of these efforts. The Winter Walk will also return from December 13 – 22 on Stockton Street with support from Amazon, JP Morgan Chase, Build Group, Gap Inc., and Waymo.

OEWD Executive Director Sarah Dennis Phillips stated support for these initiatives: “Mayor Breed has committed to the success of Union Square, and OEWD is glad to support this top-notch holiday experience Downtown that will draw people from across the City and beyond.”

The Safeway Holiday Ice Rink presented by Kaiser Permanente returns for its 17th season through January 20. Phil Ginsburg from San Francisco Recreation and Park Department remarked on its significance: “There's something magical about skating in the heart of downtown San Francisco."

Macy’s SPCA Holiday Windows featuring rescue animals will be displayed again alongside other attractions like tea services at local venues. Jonathan Davis from Macy’s noted their participation: “We’re thrilled to be part of the Winter Wander-land celebration."

The Office of Small Business's Shop DineSF campaign will host a two-day popup event showcasing local artisans on December 6-7 at San Francisco Center.

Safety remains a priority with $4 million dedicated to security enhancements under the HEART Plan. Police Chief Bill Scott assured increased police presence: “The San Francisco Police Department will be out in force in Union Square to ensure this holiday season is fun and safe for everyone."
