San Francisco, CA – Mayor London N. Breed has launched the 2024 Safe Shopper initiative in Union Square, collaborating with Marisa Rodriguez, CEO of the Union Square Alliance, city public safety leaders, and community partners. The program aims to ensure a secure shopping environment during the holiday season.

The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) will increase its presence by deploying additional police officers and community ambassadors to maintain public safety for visitors and residents. This comes as part of efforts that have led to a significant reduction in crime across San Francisco. The city reports a 14% decrease in violent crime and a 33% drop in property crime this year.

In Union Square's Central Police District specifically, there has been a notable decline in criminal activities compared to last year: violent crime is down by 9%, property crime by 46%, and larceny by 51%.

The Safe Shopper initiative includes measures such as limiting points of entry into Union Square through street closures to vehicular traffic. Patrols will be increased in parking garages by SFPD officers, Park Rangers, and other security personnel. Community Ambassadors from SFPD will also have an enhanced presence.

Mayor Breed stated, “Thanks to the work from our Police and public safety partners, and the investments we have made to improve public safety, San Francisco continues to see its lowest crime rates in a decade.”

Last year saw Mayor Breed announce a $17 million state grant aimed at combating organized retail theft. This included funding for SFPD operations as well as staffing support for the District Attorney’s Office.

Police Chief Scott remarked on efforts around Union Square: “Officers will be fanned out around Union Square this holiday season to ensure it’s fun and safe for everyone.”

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins expressed pride in joining forces with city departments and partners for this initiative: “Law enforcement has new tools available this year to help protect the safety of the public.”

The HEART Plan announced earlier focuses on revitalizing hospitality areas like Union Square with financial backing including $4 million allocated for more safety ambassadors.

Union Square Alliance is set to host Winter Wander-land again after drawing over 1.6 million attendees last year. Phil Ginsburg of Recreation and Parks highlighted that "Union Square shines brightest when we all work together."

Sarah Dennis Phillips from OEWD encouraged visits downtown during this festive period: “This year's holiday season will be exceptional.”
