San Francisco, CA - The City Performance division of the Controller's Office has launched a new website focused on Vision Zero Benchmarking. Vision Zero is a collaborative, citywide effort aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities in San Francisco. Adopted as policy in 2014, Vision Zero asserts that no one should die while traveling on city streets. Sustained efforts under this initiative are intended to reduce fatalities and injuries.

The benchmarking project aims to provide context for San Francisco’s progress on key Vision Zero metrics by comparing it with peer cities. City Performance collaborated with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, the San Francisco Department of Public Health, the San Francisco Police Department, and other stakeholders on this initiative.

“The Controller’s Office has supported the City’s Vision Zero efforts for many years. We are pleased to provide this new interactive tool for the public and policymakers to understand how San Francisco is performing in the context of its peer cities. Vision Zero is an incredibly important goal for the City,” said Controller Greg Wagner. “There is still more work to be done.”

For Vision Zero Benchmarking, City Performance compares San Francisco with 12 peer cities across the United States: Boston, Chicago, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, Oakland, Portland, San José, Seattle, and Washington D.C. These cities were selected based on population size and density similarities and include both California cities and major cities from other regions in the U.S. Data availability varied among these cities.

The benchmarking effort examined seven metrics indicating progress on key Vision Zero indicators:

- Annual Public Transit Trips

- Commute Methods

- Fatalities

- Injuries

- Separated Bike Lanes

- Street Network Speeds

- Traffic Citations

Each metric includes a dashboard or visual representation along with text explaining key takeaways. The accompanying text also discusses data sources and any limitations.

Visit the Vision Zero Benchmarking Website for more information.
