San Francisco will host its first official Diwali celebration on November 15, as announced by Mayor London N. Breed. The event will take place during the Bhangra & Beats Night Market from 5-10 p.m., with City Hall illuminated in pink and yellow to mark the occasion.
This initiative is a collaboration between the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD), Into The Streets, and Non Stop Bhangra. The popular street party aims to transform three blocks between Battery and Clay into a cultural nightlife destination, featuring live music, retail vendors, and diverse food options.
"Diwali is a time where we come together to celebrate the beautiful and rich culture of our Indian and Hindu communities; where we find moments to celebrate the good and lift up light and joy, together," said Mayor London Breed. She expressed gratitude to Into the Streets, Non Stop Bhangra, and community partners for bringing this celebration to life.
Bhangra & Beats Night Market has played a significant role in revitalizing Downtown San Francisco as an arts, culture, and nightlife hub. Since 2022, over $15 million has been invested in Downtown events by Mayor Breed. The market has attracted more than 34,000 visitors this year alone.
“The joy that Bhangra & Beats brings to Downtown is undeniable,” said Sarah Dennis Phillips, Executive Director of OEWD. She emphasized that San Francisco's inaugural Diwali celebration is one of many events planned for the holiday season.
The Diwali event will feature an all-Indian music lineup alongside traditional activities like rangoli art creation and diya giveaways. A vibrant bazaar will offer Indian snacks, sweets, apparel, jewelry, art, food options including cocktails.
