San Francisco, CA -- Mayor London N. Breed has proposed new legislation aimed at promoting and expanding outdoor community events in the city. The initiative includes waiving City fees for events like night markets, block parties, and farmers markets to make them more accessible and affordable to organize. This move is part of the Mayor's broader vision to enhance the vibrancy and entertainment offerings in San Francisco's public spaces.

Outdoor community events play a vital role in San Francisco's cultural tapestry, fostering a sense of community and supporting local businesses while attracting visitors eager to experience the city's unique charm and culinary scene. Mayor Breed emphasized the significance of these events, stating, “San Francisco is alive when our streets are filled with festivals, markets, and community events. This brings residents together and more people into our Downtown and neighborhoods.”

The fee waiver legislation targets events that are free and open to the public, occupy a limited area, and have the necessary permits. Jeffrey Tumlin, SFMTA Director of Transportation, expressed support for the initiative, highlighting that "Streets are for joy, streets are for people." The move is expected to encourage community engagement and strengthen neighborhood connections.

Furthermore, the legislation includes streamlining health permitting for special event food vendors by introducing an annual permit option. This change will enable vendors to participate in multiple events throughout the year without the need for separate permits for each occasion. Katy Tang, Director of the Office of Small Business, noted that the annual food permit will save vendors time and money, ultimately benefiting small businesses and fostering growth in the food industry.

Local business owners, such as Dontaye Ball of Gumbo Social and Sara and Phillip Roliz of Sunset Roasters, expressed their support for the proposed legislation, citing the potential savings in time and money for vendors participating in citywide events. Dontaye Ball highlighted the importance of equity and efficiency in the permitting process, while the owners of Sunset Roasters emphasized the positive impact on small businesses and the community at large.

The introduction of these legislative measures aligns with Mayor Breed's vision of creating a more vibrant and inclusive community space in San Francisco, where outdoor events can thrive, businesses can flourish, and residents can come together to celebrate the city's culture and diversity.
