San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed announced today that the city is seeing a positive trend in crime rates as it gears up to implement new public safety measures. According to Mayor Breed, "While this is positive news, we have more work to do make our city safer for all and we are not letting up."

The first quarter of 2024 has shown significant reductions in both property and violent crimes compared to the same period in 2023. Property crime is down 32%, with car break-ins down 51%, burglary down 17%, and motor vehicle theft down 10%. Meanwhile, violent crime has decreased by 14%, with notable reductions in homicide, rape, robbery, assault, and gun violence.

Chief Bill Scott of the San Francisco Police Department expressed optimism about the city's crime reduction strategies, stating, "These downward trending crime rates show that the SFPD is on the right path." The Chief emphasized the importance of utilizing modern technology to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement efforts.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins highlighted the collaborative approach across all levels of government to improve public safety, ensuring accountability for those who commit crimes in San Francisco. Sheriff Paul Miyamoto echoed this sentiment, stating, "Implementing Prop E gives our partners in the Police Department more tools to continue proactive efforts to decrease crime rates."

Mayor Breed reiterated the city's commitment to safety, acknowledging that statistics may not matter to crime victims but assuring that law enforcement agencies are dedicated to bringing justice to victims and protecting communities. She emphasized the ongoing coordination across government levels, the introduction of new tools and policies, and the unwavering support for officers, deputies, and attorneys in their crime-fighting endeavors.

With the implementation of Proposition E and the deployment of new public safety tools, including Automated License Plate Readers and drones, San Francisco aims to enhance its technological capabilities and increase the presence of officers on the streets to ensure a safer environment for residents, workers, and visitors.
