San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has announced a citywide hiring freeze in response to the largest budget deficit in the city's history. This measure was revealed during his first department head meeting and is part of his strategy to address fiscal challenges by curbing spending and enhancing efficiency.
Mayor Lurie has instructed city departments to align their programming and expenditures with city priorities, emphasizing evidence-based results. New contracts or programs that have not been signed or implemented will be paused as part of this directive.
These measures build upon budget instructions given to city departments in December, encouraging department heads to identify necessary savings. However, positions that are historically difficult to fill and those directly supporting public safety and health are exempt from the hiring freeze.
“San Francisco is making a comeback, and I intend to put us in the best possible position to drive that growth,” stated Mayor Lurie. “Our city is facing a major budget deficit, and today, the era of band-aid solutions is over. We are committed to fiscal discipline, giving San Franciscans the accountability they demand, and focusing the government on doing the core things well.”
