San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed has announced the advancement of the city's Curbside EV Charging Pilot Program. This development marks a significant step in expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure, supporting San Francisco's climate action goals and promoting equitable EV adoption for residents without off-street parking.
The program is a collaboration among several city departments, including the SFMTA, San Francisco Public Works, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, and the San Francisco Environment Department. It involves community stakeholders to ensure broad support and successful implementation.
EV charging providers submit applications detailing their technology and proposed installation sites. The city reviews these applications to ensure they align with its Climate Action Plan and equity goals. Approved applicants then proceed with obtaining necessary permits such as Excavation Permits from Public Works.
Once installed, the program will collect data from charging providers to monitor usage and demand, which will inform a comprehensive citywide policy for curbside EV charging. The aim is to install a select number of chargers over the next two years or until a citywide implementation effort is completed.
"This pilot exemplifies the City’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions from the transportation sector and meet our climate goals," said SFMTA Director of Transportation Jeff Tumlin. "We can help improve access to a cleaner commute by supporting multiple modes of low carbon transportation."
Three companies—Urban EV, it's electric, and Voltpost—are advancing their proposals in this phase of the program:
- Urban EV focuses on integrating user-friendly charging stations into residential neighborhoods.
- It's electric plans to deploy compact chargers that integrate seamlessly into urban landscapes.
- Voltpost aims to retrofit existing lamp posts into modular Level 2 charging platforms.
Each company brings unique solutions designed to provide convenient access while minimizing disruption.
“Urban EV is proud to call San Francisco home and to collaborate with the City on this groundbreaking pilot program,” said Alex Grant, Urban EV Founder.
“Our partnership with San Francisco allows us to collectively demonstrate our unique model of low-impact curbside charging,” said Tiya Gordon, COO of it’s electric.
“Voltpost is thrilled to collaborate with San Francisco in redefining how cities can embrace sustainability through existing infrastructure,” said Luke Mairo, Co-founder, COO of Voltpost.
The permitting process will begin soon for proposed stations in Duboce Triangle and Dogpatch neighborhoods, with potential expansion in coming weeks.
Mayor Breed's administration has made notable progress on climate initiatives like CleanPowerSF, legislation requiring commercial lots to install EV chargers, phasing out natural gas in new buildings, and launching Climate Action Community Grants totaling over $900,000 last year.
