San Francisco, CA – Mayor London N. Breed has announced a plan to introduce 200 days of programming in Union Square next year. This initiative aims to revitalize the city's downtown retail and hospitality hub. The Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) has partnered with Biederman Redevelopment Ventures Corporation (BRV) to develop daily activities starting in early 2025.

The partnership is part of Mayor Breed's broader efforts to rejuvenate San Francisco's key retail district. "San Francisco is making significant progress," stated Mayor Breed, emphasizing the commitment to enhancing iconic destinations.

Union Square attracts nearly 10 million visitors annually and houses over 4.8 million square feet of retail space. In June 2024, Mayor Breed introduced the HEART Action Plan to address challenges such as storefront vacancies and declining tourism post-COVID-19. Supported by $13 million from the Mayor's budget, the plan focuses on public events, strengthening retail, boosting tourism, and expanding neighborhood uses.

BRV will provide around 200 days of programming throughout the year, collaborating with local businesses and performers. Activities will range from arts and crafts to lunchtime performances, complementing San Francisco's civic celebrations.

"Mayor Breed’s commitment to Union Square has made it possible for us to tap into Biederman’s unparalleled track-record," said Sarah Dennis Phillips, Executive Director of OEWD.

BRV President Dan Biederman expressed honor in contributing to Union Square's revitalization: "We are honored to help the Mayor and the Union Square Alliance."

Phil Ginsburg from SF Rec and Park highlighted Union Square's historical significance: "Reinvigorating Union Square through creative, daily programming is vital."

Marisa Rodriguez of the Union Square Alliance noted that BRV-led activations would enhance visitor experiences: "There’s something for everyone in Union Square."

Sharman Spector from Britex Fabrics welcomed the new endeavor: "We are grateful...to bring more exciting programming."

Recent initiatives include Winter Wander-land and SF Live concerts, drawing significant crowds. A redesign of Powell Street is underway, alongside an expansion of Vacant to Vibrant Pop-Ups.
