Today, San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed marked the beginning of construction for a new affordable housing project at 3300 Mission Street in Bernal Heights. This development is one of the first of its kind in nearly two decades within the Mission Bernal corridor and will feature 35 studio apartments aimed at low-income individuals and small households.
Mayor Breed emphasized the significance of this project for local residents, stating, “The Mission Bernal corridor is home to a diverse and vibrant community, and the development of 3300 Mission Street is a big step forward in our work to deliver housing for low-income residents allowing them to stay in the neighborhood they call home.”
The building site was previously occupied by the Graywood Hotel and 3300 Club, both destroyed by fire in 2016. The new structure will replace an existing three-story building with commercial space and single-room occupancy units with a six-story building offering more affordable housing.
Senator Scott Wiener praised the initiative, saying, “This new project will bring much needed homes to working people. I’m proud to see San Francisco embracing new homes even in neighborhoods that have not seen new affordable housing in decades.”
District 9 Supervisor Hillary Ronen also expressed her support: “Today’s groundbreaking at 3300 Mission proves what is possible when our City, neighborhood developers, and community come together around a mission to build affordable housing.”
The development is a collaboration between three Black-led organizations: Bernal Heights Housing Corporation (BHHC), Tabernacle Community Development Corporation (TCDC), and Mitchelville Real Estate Group (MREG). The Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development supports this partnership through capacity-building programs.
Gina Dacus from BHHC highlighted the importance of this venture: “We believe everyone deserves a place to call home, and we are proud that 3300 Mission Street will help residents remain in San Francisco by providing more affordable housing.”
Todd Clayter from TCDC remarked on their collaborative efforts: "Partnering with like-minded affordable housing organizations strengthens our individual capacity and serves the best interests of the communities we serve."
Andre White from MREG shared his enthusiasm for contributing to this project: “I'm so honored that my team and I have been trusted to be of service...the experience has been life-changing.”
Financing for 3300 Mission comes from Low Income Housing Tax Credits along with local funding sources. Initial property acquisition was funded by the San Francisco Housing Accelerator Fund. The project involves several local design firms including Guzman Construction Group, BAR Architects, and Plant Construction Company.
Construction is expected to conclude by summer 2026 with leasing beginning shortly thereafter.
