Mayor London N. Breed, along with Supervisor Myrna Melgar and San Francisco Recreation and Park Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg, participated in the unveiling of improvements to the Ninth and Lincoln Gateway at Golden Gate Park. The project, which introduces two new plazas with additional landscaping, enhances one of the city’s busiest park entrances.

This entrance connects Golden Gate Park to the commercial corridor of Ninth Avenue and Irving Street in the Inner Sunset neighborhood. The redesigned gateway features open plazas on each side of Ninth Avenue with central raised planters containing trees. Additional upgrades include granite steps with brass rails, enhanced lighting, and a Golden Gate Park sign made from a boulder.

“The 9th and Lincoln improvement project is a great example of our work to deliver world-class parks and open spaces that are accessible by car, public transit, bike and foot,” stated Mayor London Breed. “I am thrilled to see the product of our investments in open spaces and experiences for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.”

San Francisco has seen significant transformations in its parks over the last two years. The Ninth and Lincoln Gateway project began construction in July 2023 after being designed in 2020. It incorporates new paving, striping, electrical upgrades, utility enhancements, relocated bus shelters for improved pedestrian safety, and ADA-compliant curb ramps.

The $3 million development includes approximately 5,500 square feet of concrete paving and 6,000 square feet of native plantings supported by an updated irrigation system. This aligns with goals set out in the Golden Gate Park Master Plan published in 1998.

“San Franciscans dreamed of making the best urban park in the country better," commented District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar. "These improvements will be much appreciated by residents, visitors, and merchants alike!”

Phil Ginsburg highlighted that Golden Gate Park attracts about 24 million visits annually: “This renovation invites everyone to experience the wonderful blend of urban life and nature we enjoy in the Inner Sunset."

Andrea Jadwin from Inner Sunset Park Neighbors expressed enthusiasm about how this design unites both parkgoers and local businesses: “This new design seamlessly blends the two.”

San Francisco Public Works contributed to design work while traffic management assistance came from San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

Recent achievements for San Francisco's Recreation Department include opening India Basin Waterfront Park's southern half earlier this month; revitalizing UN Plaza; restoring Middle Lake within Golden Gate Park; alongside other ongoing projects funded through bonds or partnerships like renovations at Crocker Amazon or Embarcadero Plaza downtown.

Since COVID-19 hit globally causing disruptions everywhere including public gatherings — numerous concerts have occurred across various city locations such as McLaren or Union Square among others—showcasing resilience amid challenges faced worldwide during pandemic times yet continuing community engagement locally here despite obstacles encountered elsewhere beyond borders
