San Francisco, CA — School Board President Lainie Motamedi announced her resignation from the San Francisco Board of Education today, after serving for two years. Appointed by Mayor London N. Breed in March 2022 following a school board recall, Motamedi has held the position of President since January 2024.

To fill the remainder of Motamedi’s term, Mayor Breed swore in Phil Kim as the newest member of the Board of Education. Kim brings 12 years of experience in K-12 public education and most recently served as Executive Director of School Strategy and Coherence at SFUSD.

Motamedi cited personal and health reasons for her resignation. During her tenure, she oversaw several initiatives including improved literacy and math curriculum, better compensation for educators, stabilized district finances, and enhanced accountability measures for student learning.

“I am grateful for Lainie Motamedi’s service to the City of San Francisco and our families,” said Mayor Breed. “She stepped into office with a clear vision about what needed to be done to improve our schools.”

Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) also praised Motamedi's contributions: “President Motamedi has done yeoman’s work during her tenure on the Board of Education.”

Motamedi expressed confidence in her successor: “I wholeheartedly support [Mayor Breed's] choice in appointing Phil Kim for the remainder of this term. He has the experience, commitment, and energy to deliver for our kids."

Phil Kim was sworn in during a ceremony at City Hall. His term will run until November 2026 but may open up earlier depending on upcoming citywide elections.

Kim's background includes significant expertise in STEM instruction and leadership roles within educational organizations focused on inclusivity and support for marginalized youth.

“The District has numerous challenges ahead... Phil Kim has extensive experience in education,” stated Mayor Breed.

Senator Wiener added his endorsement: “Mayor Breed could not have made a better choice... Phil has my complete confidence.”

Kim expressed gratitude upon his appointment: “I am determined to carry on the good work of the Board... centering our students and families in all our decisions.”

Board members Matt Alexander and Superintendent Dr. Matt Wayne echoed their support for both Motamedi's past efforts and Kim's future role.

“Working alongside President Motamedi this past year has been a privilege,” said Alexander. Dr. Wayne noted that Kim is well-positioned to make an immediate impact as a Board commissioner.
