San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco officials unveiled the Mission Cabins, a new temporary shelter program aimed at assisting individuals experiencing homelessness in the city. Mayor London N. Breed and Supervisor Hillary Ronen introduced the initiative, which will provide 60 cabins for homeless individuals at 1979 Mission Street.
Mayor Breed emphasized the importance of the Mission Cabins, stating, “The new Mission Cabins will provide a critical new space in our work to bring people off the streets and into a safe, stable environment.” The project is designed to offer temporary housing and support services until a long-term affordable housing development is initiated at the site.
Supervisor Hillary Ronen highlighted the significance of the initiative in addressing the homelessness crisis, stating, “The homelessness crisis is the biggest problem facing our city. Now, approximately 65 people who have been homeless and living on the streets in the Mission will have dignified shelter and around-the-clock social services.”
The Mission Cabins program is part of San Francisco's continuous efforts to expand access to temporary shelter. Shireen McSpadden, the executive director of the San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, noted that the launch of the Mission Cabins represents an innovative step in providing shelter for homeless individuals in the Mission district.
Operated by Five Keys Schools and Programs, the Mission Cabins will offer onsite social services and support. Steve Good, executive director of Five Keys, expressed pride in partnering with the city to support the operations of the Mission Cabins, emphasizing the organization's commitment to providing a safe and dignified environment for the unsheltered.
Public Works Director Carla Short praised the Mission Cabins initiative as a thoughtful and collaborative project that offers a safe and welcoming alternative to living on the streets. Additionally, Director of Health Dr. Grant Colfax highlighted the importance of providing onsite healthcare services to address health disparities in the community.
The Mission Cabins aim to provide individuals experiencing homelessness with a safe and temporary living environment, along with the necessary services to transition beyond homelessness. With private cabins, support services, and a focus on dignity and compassion, the program seeks to improve the lives of those in need and enhance neighborhood conditions in the Mission district.
