San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed has unveiled the next steps in her Housing for All plan aimed at accelerating housing construction in the city. The plan, launched in February 2023, focuses on removing barriers to construction, expediting permitting processes, and supporting affordable housing initiatives.
In a statement, Mayor Breed emphasized the ongoing efforts to facilitate the creation of new homes in San Francisco, stating, "Housing for All is about doing the hard and necessary work to make it easier to create the new homes San Francisco so badly needs."
As part of the Housing for All initiative, Mayor Breed has implemented various measures to advance housing construction, including changes to housing laws, streamlining of permitting procedures, and enhancing funding for affordable housing projects.
Moving forward, Mayor Breed outlined key priorities to further support her Housing for All agenda. These include refining the Rezoning Proposal to prioritize mid-rise housing near transit corridors, removing arbitrary density limits on commercial corridors, advancing major housing projects like the Treasure Island development, and securing additional funding for affordable housing initiatives.
In response to Mayor Breed's proactive approach, Jane Natoli of YIMBY expressed support, stating, "Mayor Breed continues to lead the way in proposing actual tangible solutions to our housing shortage and putting them into practice."
Corey Smith, Executive Director of the Housing Action Coalition, highlighted the importance of prioritizing housing in high-opportunity areas, affirming that the proposed rezoning efforts are a positive step towards increasing housing availability.
Annie Fryman from SPUR commended the city's progress in permitting reforms over the past year and expressed optimism for the upcoming citywide rezoning efforts, stating, "I am excited to see the same level of ambition and focus applied this next year for the citywide rezoning."
Mayor Breed's Housing for All plan aims to address San Francisco's housing challenges by implementing comprehensive strategies to boost housing supply and affordability. The ongoing efforts underscore the city's commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible housing market for residents.
