In a bid to enhance public safety and combat criminal activities, San Francisco authorities have commenced the installation of Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) across the city. The initiative, spearheaded by Mayor London N. Breed, aims to disrupt organized retail theft and motor vehicle theft.

The city's plan involves setting up 400 ALPR cameras at approximately 100 intersections, with the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) utilizing these tools to address critical public safety concerns. Mayor Breed highlighted the importance of incorporating technology to support law enforcement efforts and ensure the safety of residents, businesses, and visitors.

Police Chief Bill Scott expressed his enthusiasm for the new ALPR network, emphasizing the additional support it would provide to the SFPD in their crime-fighting endeavors. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins also welcomed the installation of these cameras, recognizing the value they bring in providing actionable information for criminal investigations.

The installation of the ALPR cameras was made possible through a $17.3 million grant from the State’s Organized Retail Theft Grant Program. With expedited approval and collaboration with relevant city departments, including the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), the cameras are expected to be fully operational within the next three months.

The City has partnered with Flock Safety to deploy and maintain the ALPR cameras, with over 5,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide utilizing their technology to combat various criminal activities. The authorized use of ALPR technology in San Francisco is limited to specific cases, such as license plate recognition and assisting in criminal investigations.

The implementation of ALPR technology aligns with San Francisco's ongoing efforts to improve public safety outcomes. The city has witnessed a significant reduction in crime rates, with notable decreases in property crime, larceny theft, and violent crime compared to previous years.

As San Francisco continues to leverage technology and collaborative strategies to enhance public safety, the deployment of ALPR cameras represents a proactive step towards creating a safer environment for all residents and visitors.
