Mayor London Breed expressed her pride in San Francisco's history of supporting women and their rights during the celebration of Women's History Month at City Hall. She honored five local women for their contributions to the city, emphasizing the theme of 'Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.'
Director of the Department on the Status of Women, Kimberly Ellis, highlighted the importance of honoring women who continue to contribute to communities and serve as sources of hope and inspiration. She stated, “This year, with so much going on in the world, it’s important to lift up women who continue to contribute to our communities and serve as beacons of hope and light."
The honorees recognized by Mayor Breed at the event were Claudine Cheng, Hala Hijazi, Jaynry Mak, Mattie Scott, and Roselyne “Cissie” Swig. Each of these women has made significant contributions in their respective fields, from advocacy to community leadership.
Claudine Cheng, an accomplished attorney and civic rights advocate, serves as the President of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Foundation and has been actively engaged in public service on various commissions. Hala Hijazi, the Co-Founder and CEO of HKH Consulting Inc., is dedicated to advancing civil and human rights through her business endeavors.
Jaynry Mak, a longtime advocate for youth programs and underrepresented communities, has been recognized for her efforts in advocating for women's rights and securing critical funding for youth programs. Mattie Scott, a champion for gun violence survivors, works tirelessly in prevention advocacy and educational awareness to address the root causes of gun violence.
Roselyne “Cissie” Swig, a prominent philanthropist and civic leader, has dedicated her lifetime to promoting arts, women empowerment, education, and political advocacy. Her efforts have earned her numerous awards and accolades from the community.
Mayor Breed's commitment to supporting women is evident in the increased representation of women on policy bodies during her leadership. She has spearheaded various initiatives to support women, including the Bay Area Abortion Rights Coalition, the Women and Families First Initiative, and the Women's Construction Academy, among others.
San Francisco continues to uphold its long history of supporting women's rights and freedoms under Mayor Breed's leadership, with a focus on equality and inclusion for all.
