California State Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) advocated for the celebration of Pride Month by tweeting pictures with a local drag group “The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.”

"Kicking off our Capitol Pride celebration with the amazing Sister Roma & other Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence," the senator tweeted. "We’re honoring Sister Roma & other badass LGBTQ community leaders from around California."

Wiener is a self-proclaimed gay man who continues to fight for LGBTQ+ recognition and respect. He celebrated the start of Pride Month with a tweet talking about how the Right is trying to get rid of all LGBTQ people.

“The campaign to erase LGBTQ people—to eliminate us—is now so intense that it’s happening even in California,” Wiener said. “Just in the past week, a So Cal school board banned teaching about Harvey Milk & at an LA school, a Pride flag was burned. School Pride assemblies are being protested.”

In the next tweet in the thread he shared pictures of pride flags being burned, one a cartoon photo and another a stock image, saying, “The bigots keep saying it’s just about the kids. That’s never what it’s been about for them. They want us gone — all of us. That’s why their bans on gender-affirming care for kids quickly morph into bans for adults. It’s why images like these are proliferating.”

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are "an order of queer and trans nuns," according to their website. First appearing in 1979 in San Francisco, they have since devoted themselves ”to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment.” The site goes on to say, “We use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit.”

A tweet from their twitter page celebrating the start of pride month also referenced comments they had received. “After all the hateful emails, comments, and private messages we’ve been getting lately, we just want to wish you all a HAPPY PRIDE MONTH! Be safe out there, spread love & Joy! We love you all!”
