San Francisco, CA – Mayor London N. Breed announced today that SEIU Local 87 and the San Francisco Maintenance Contractors Association have reached a new contract agreement, averting a strike that could have caused significant disruptions for San Francisco's workers. SEIU Local 87 represents over 5,000 janitors, while the San Francisco Maintenance Contractors Association represents janitorial services across the city, including major commercial buildings.

With the existing contract set to expire on July 31, Mayor Breed convened both parties at City Hall for negotiations starting on Tuesday, July 30. SEIU Local 87 had authorized a strike if an agreement was not reached. Over the past week, with assistance from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, both parties worked collaboratively at City Hall, including through the night. On Friday night, they agreed to a new contract extending through July 31, 2028.

“I want to thank all the parties for working collaboratively through the night to reach a solution that avoids a strike and gives our hard-working janitors the support and recognition they deserve for the difficult and important work they do every day,” said Mayor London Breed. “I’m grateful for everyone who stepped up to get this done, including Olga Miranda and the leadership of Local 87 and the San Francisco Maintenance Contractors Association. I also want to recognize Federal Mediator Rachel Lev for her work. I want to thank my Chief of Staff Sean Elsbernd, our Director of Human Resources Carol Isen, and Steve Kawa, all of whom helped throughout the week to keep this conversation moving in the right direction. This agreement is a major win for San Francisco and for our working people. It not only avoids what would have been a very difficult strike but shows that we can come together to work towards solutions that truly benefit our entire city.”

“Our members turned up the heat in the streets to fight for equity in San Francisco,” said Olga Miranda, President of SEIU Local 87. “SEIU Local 87 janitors continue to set the highest standard for the West Coast. We were able to get a historic contract that will ensure essential workers are paid a fair wage, health insurance, and get respect they deserve.”

“The contractors are pleased that we were able to reach a settlement with the Janitors Union without disruption,” said Jim Beard, spokesperson for the San Francisco Maintenance Contractors Association. “After long and difficult negotiations, we believe this settlement is fair for all stakeholders involved: it is fair for our valued janitors who work hard to keep our buildings clean; it is also fair for our clients and their tenants who bring so much to this city. We are very appreciative of Mayor Breed and her support in reaching an agreement.”
