San Francisco, CA – Mayor London N. Breed and Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin announced full funding for essential capital repairs at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) and Laguna Honda Hospital (LHH). These improvements aim to enhance services for over 100,000 individuals who receive primary, emergency, long-term, and mental health care annually within San Francisco’s healthcare system.
Mayor Breed will reallocate $10 million from the Healthy, Safe and Vibrant San Francisco Bond proposal, totaling $66 million for infrastructure repairs at the hospitals. Additionally, her proposed budget includes a $38.56 million investment for these facilities. With these adjustments, President Peskin has joined as a co-sponsor of the bond alongside Supervisors Ronen, Mandelman, Melgar, Stefani, Dorsey, and Engardio.
The bond and budget will fund over $104.5 million in capital improvements to ensure safety and service continuity while addressing critical facility issues that could impact licensing and regulatory compliance. Mayor Breed emphasized the importance of this initiative: “This is a difficult budget cycle we are again facing, so it is critical that we utilize every resource available to us to invest in the necessary healthcare infrastructure improvements to protect our public health safety net – thousands of patients rely on it for top-tier care.”
Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin highlighted the collaborative effort: “Solving for adult psych facilities at S.F. General, a new Chinatown Public Health Center and City Clinic, and Laguna Honda Hospital renovations are not only equally critical but a testament to what the City can accomplish when we work collaboratively to creatively solve funding problems.”
In April, Mayor Breed proposed the Healthy, Safe and Vibrant San Francisco bond measure aimed at investing $205 million in public health infrastructure. This includes renovating the Chinatown Health Clinic and supporting the San Francisco City Clinic.
As proposed by Mayor Breed, the $390 million bond funding would be allocated across four main categories:
- Strengthening public health infrastructure projects like ZSFG, LHH, Chinatown Health Clinic and San Francisco City Clinic
- Investing in shelter and housing for homeless families
- Delivering street safety improvements and road repaving citywide
- Supporting public space and park improvement projects
The two-year budget for Fiscal Years 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 continues prioritizing medical services expansion including mental health services.
If approved by eight votes from the Board of Supervisors and passed by voters in November with a two-thirds majority, these investments will proceed. The Budget Committee will review the two-year budget next week before forwarding it to the full Board for approval by August 1.
