San Francisco is gearing up to celebrate the Lunar New Year with a range of cultural events and activities, emphasizing community support and local businesses. The Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) has launched a dedicated webpage at sf.gov/lunar-new-year to guide residents and visitors through various festivities leading up to the Chinese New Year Parade on February 15.
Mayor Daniel Lurie highlighted the significance of small businesses in San Francisco’s recovery, stating, “Small businesses are the backbone of our city, and they represent the heart of our neighborhoods and play a vital role in San Francisco’s comeback.”
In collaboration with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and other organizations, OEWD supports key events such as the Flower Market Fair on January 25-26 and the Community Street Fair on February 15-16. These events aim to spotlight small businesses integral to San Francisco’s Lunar New Year traditions.
Rodney Fong, CEO of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, expressed gratitude for the city’s investment in these celebrations: “The Chamber is grateful for the City’s investments in this cultural celebration that will bring countless visitors to support San Francisco’s Asian communities and small businesses at a key time for our City.”
Sarah Dennis Phillips, Executive Director of OEWD, noted, “By supporting these traditions, the City helps strengthen our communities and ensures their continued vibrancy for generations to come.”
The OEWD website also offers guides for exploring cultural centers like Chinatown. Initiatives such as The Richmond Neighborhood Center’s “S.E.L.F.” (Shop-Eat-Local-First) encourage support for local businesses.
Additionally, programs like the Legacy Business Registry provide resources to long-standing businesses. Kenneth and Alan Leong from Ellie and Eva Co., recognized as a Legacy Business in 2023, shared their experience: “We are grateful for the City’s investment in Lunar New Year and the many businesses that depend on it to thrive.”
