The Board of Supervisors in San Francisco has unanimously approved legislation to purchase a new, permanent home for the nation’s first LGBTQ History Museum. The legislation, sponsored by Mayor London N. Breed and Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, will allow the city to acquire 2280 Market Street in the Castro neighborhood as the museum’s location.
Mayor Breed emphasized the significance of this decision, stating, “Today’s vote marks a monumental step in our decades-long work to find a suitable space that will preserve the City’s LGBTQ history and culture.” She expressed gratitude towards those who contributed to making this project possible.
In 2021, Mayor Breed allocated $12.5 million for acquiring a site for an LGBTQ History Museum. Additionally, Senator Scott Wiener helped secure another $5.5 million from the State of California in 2022 to support this initiative.
The approval enables San Francisco to enter into a purchase agreement for the property at 2280 Market Street. Once finalized, a lease agreement with the GLBT Historical Society and Community Arts Stabilization Trust (CAST) will be established. CAST is dedicated to securing affordable spaces for non-profit arts organizations.
Supervisor Mandelman praised Mayor Breed’s commitment: “Mayor Breed deserves enormous credit for committing budget resources for this acquisition back in 2021.” He believes that they have found an ideal location within Castro with room for future expansion.
Senator Wiener commented on the importance of preserving LGBTQ stories amid current challenges: “At a time when right-wing forces are attempting to erase LGBTQ people, one of the most powerful things we can do is tell our stories.”
The building at 2280 Market Street includes a two-story structure with ample space designated for museum use. It offers significant potential as leases expire over time allowing further expansion into ground floor areas.
GLBT Historical Society Executive Director Roberto Ordeñana expressed gratitude towards all involved parties: “Today marks a pivotal and historic moment for the LGBTQ community and San Francisco.” He called upon community members and allies alike in supporting future planning phases needed toward realizing their vision fully.
