FOIA Request to University of California College of the Law-San Francisco Regarding Chinese National Students on June 3, 2025.
A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request has been submitted to the University of California College of the Law-San Francisco seeking detailed information about Chinese National students enrolled at the institution. The request, sent by a news reporter from the San Francisco Sun in collaboration with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, aims to obtain records under the California Public Records Act § 6250 et seq.
The request specifically asks for documents or lists that reveal all current students who are Chinese Nationals and their respective departments. If individual names are protected, it requests a total count broken down by department. Additionally, it seeks information on scholarships awarded to these students, including amounts and sources, with particular interest in those affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.
Furthermore, the request includes a call for any university policies or procedures that describe how they monitor students, including Chinese Nationals, to safeguard intellectual property and confidential information.
As members of the media committed to transparency and accountability in public institutions, we emphasize our role in disseminating this information to hold such entities accountable. In line with this mission, we have requested a fee waiver for accessing these public records. Our efforts are supported by The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to investigating governmental agencies and promoting transparency through Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws.
