Mayor London Breed and City Administrator Carmen Chu have announced the appointment of Eli Gelardin as the new Director of the Mayor’s Office on Disability in San Francisco. Gelardin has an extensive background, having served as CEO of the Marin Center for Independent Living for 17 years and co-founding the Marin Aging and Disability Institute.
“Eli Gelardin’s longstanding commitment to supporting rights of people with disabilities as well as his strong ties to the community make Eli an excellent addition to lead the Mayor’s Office on Disability,” said Mayor London Breed. She emphasized the importance of advocating for vulnerable populations under Gelardin’s leadership.
City Administrator Carmen Chu praised Gelardin’s impact in advancing disability rights across the Bay Area, expressing confidence that his skills will benefit San Francisco. “I look forward to working with him on our City’s efforts to make every service, program, and space accessible to people with disabilities,” she stated.
The Mayor’s Office on Disability ensures city programs are accessible and oversees local implementation of disability laws. It also provides technical assistance to city officials and facilitates public discussions on disability policy through the Mayor’s Disability Council.
Gelardin expressed his enthusiasm for his new role: “I am deeply honored to take on this role and join the City and County of San Francisco in advancing its commitment to disability rights, accessibility, and equity.” He highlighted his dedication to creating inclusive systems that empower diverse communities.
With over 21 years in disability rights advocacy, Gelardin expanded services at Marin CIL significantly during his tenure. He was also involved in establishing resource hubs like Marin’s Aging and Disability Resource Connection. In August 2024, he was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to serve on California State Rehabilitation Council.
Kelly Dearman from the Department of Disability and Aging Services welcomed Gelardin’s expertise: “We are thrilled to welcome Eli… We look forward to his leadership.” Sheri Albers from the Mayor’s Disability Council added her support: “We look forward… collaborating with [him]…to make San Francisco a truly disability inclusive city.”
Gelardin is a graduate of UC Berkeley where he participated in their disabled students program. His appointment begins January 6, 2025.
