Calbright College has received approval from the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS) to register its IT Support, Cybersecurity, and Data Analysis programs as pre-apprenticeships. This development is aimed at preparing individuals for advanced apprenticeship programs. The approval signifies the alignment of these programs with industry standards, facilitating a talent pipeline ready for high-demand roles.
The college announced plans to create paid apprenticeship opportunities for alumni through a partnership with TechSF, an established apprenticeship program in the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD). TechSF connects pre-apprenticeship pathways with tech employers, helping job seekers gain experience and certifications while addressing skills gaps for companies.
“Calbright’s skills-based programs are closely-aligned with California labor market demands to set our students up for success in today’s workforce,” said Michael Younger, vice president of workforce, strategy, and innovation at Calbright College. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with the City and County of San Francisco…to offer paid tech apprenticeships for Calbright alumni seeking to further their training and connect with potential employers.”
This initiative coincides with the 10th annual National Apprenticeship Week (NAW), enhancing employer access to job-ready talent trained by Calbright College. “National Apprenticeship Week acknowledges the significant impact apprenticeships have on shaping our future workforce,” stated Sarah Dennis Phillips, Executive Director of OEWD.
Alicia Rangel, a Calbright alumna now working as a technology consultant apprentice at Accenture, shared her positive experience: “Calbright has truly helped me build my technology skills all while empowering me with career readiness opportunities.”
With DAS approval status, Calbright will continue partnering across the state to provide adult learners better opportunities in today’s labor market while supplying skilled employees to California businesses. This effort aligns with Governor Newsom’s goal of providing 500,000 earn-and-learn apprenticeships by 2029.
Pre-apprenticeships offered by Calbright equip participants with necessary skills and hands-on experience. Employers benefit from accessing talent already trained in key areas. TechSF collaborates directly with employers to assess each apprentice’s skills and tailor training accordingly.
